Wilhelm Hansen was the creator of Ordrupgaard. He bought his first piece of art in 1892 and throughout the 1920s and 30s he created one of the finest collections of French art in Northern Europe. He was director of the Hafnia insurance company and during his many business trips he bought works of art. He settled at Ordrupgaard, which Gotfred Tvede built in 1918.
